Camp Mahachee, on Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables, has served
countless girls, adult members and community members since 1945. And
with many historic properties in our community, invasive plants and
animal species have become a threat to the long-term success and
environmental sustainability of the Camp and adjacent properties.
In 2022, Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida committed to remediation
work undertaken to Camp Mahachee's front entrance in partnership with
Coral Gables Garden Club, Miami-Dade County and the City of Coral
Gables, GSTF recently undertook the final phase of a three-phase
remediation and restoration project to:
- Remove invasive plant species
- Restore the native,
resilient hardwood South Florida hammock
- Create a butterfly
pollinator garden
We also began a series of enchancements throughout the property,
from installing impact windows, a water pump and sprinkler system, and
electricity in the front entrance, to upgrading the fence, refreshing
cabins and updating the fire circle.
There is still work to be done. Learn
how you can help us keep Camp Mahachee beautiful for girls now
and in the future.
