It takes a village! As part of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Miami Class 44, Vill4ge Mi4mi teamed up with Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida on the restoration of the historic Camp Mahachee.
Celebrating nearly 100 years of the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida and 75 years of Camp Mahachee property, Vill4ge Mi4mi set out to raise funds and put in sweat equity to restore Camp Mahachee's cabins and trails to create a safe, visually appealing, and memorable experience for Girl Scouts to enjoy as they connect with nature.
One hundred days later and with over $26,000 raised in dollars and in-kind donations, Team Vill4ge Mi4mi accomplished its mission:
- 1 new fence provided
- 4 cabins, 1 bath lodge, and 1 lodge pressure cleaned, painted, restored
- 2 campfire zones refurbished
- Native species planted
- 32 scholarships coming to fund girls in underserved communities
- Creation of a team legacy patch and legacy fund
“In partnership and in inspiration from the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, I was proud to have played a leading role with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce's Vill4ge Mi4mi team in creating and preserving a piece of Miami GIRL history at Camp Mahachee,” said Shreya Kuntawala, team lead and director of government relations for the University of Miami. “Having had the opportunity to not only help beautify physical aspects of the historical campsite, but rather create a lasting legacy aligned with the Girl Scouts mission is what was most important to us. To embody the Girl Scouts and create a space reflective of this was incredibly touching, and to do so with the community made it all the more special. After all, it will always take a Vill4ge. I look forward to seeing the Girl Scouts and the campsite flourish for years to come.”
