More than 70 Miami Girl Scouts “earned their wings” by learning about all things aviation on March 24, 2018. These girls, ranging from 4th graders to high school seniors participated in Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida’s Women in Aviation program, designed for Girl Scouts by the Florida Goldcoast 99s.
During the program girls participated in hands-on workshops where they learned about the parts of the airplane, the aviation alphabet, navigation for pilots and all the aviation career opportunities within an airport environment. They also tested their skills on the flight school simulator and took a tour of the North Perry Airport Tower.
Girls also met with Ruth Jacobs at the flying adventures station where they learned about her adventure flying around the world and landing on all 7 continents (yes, even Antarctica!) Ruth and her flying partner co-hold the record for flying around the world in a single-engine airplane, landing on all seven continents. This feat put her in the Guinness Book of World Records.
“We are so grateful to the Goldcoast 99s for opening up girls eyes to all the possibilities within the aviation industry,” says Lori Ross, Director of Programs and Troop Support. “ From traditional troops to our Community Troops, these girls came together from across Miami Dade County to explore their interest in aviation and they learned that the sky truly is the limit. You can tell girls that they can do anything and be anything, but it’s not until they see strong women role models like Ruth and the women of the 99s, they understand that anything is possible.”
