This year GSTF celebrated another milestone — our summer camp program at South Miami Little House celebrated 30 years of Girl Scout fun! From black socks (and sock check), clever camp names, badge work, pool time, end-of-week skits with their units, Girl Scout songs and traditions, girls have been learning, growing and connecting at Camp Little House since 1994.
How did summer camp get started? In 1994, Camp Director Sizzle and Assistant Camp Director Moonlight (sorry, can’t share their real names — camp traditions!) cooked up an idea for a Girl Scout Camp that would allow girls to connect across troops, work on badges, experience traditions and build memories that last a lifetime.
Today, Camp Little House hosts 350 girls every summer. Sizzle and Moonlight still run the camp, which includes PA/CIT training a month before camp starts, planning overnights with Sizzle’s famous “Sizzle Sketti,” and hosting Camp United — an open event where girls and community gather to roast marshmallows, sing songs and participate in a flag retirement community. Each week of camp is also centered on a fun theme with different activities from STEM and space exploration to color wars and camp Olympics.
Thank you to everyone who’s made Camp Little House a special place for Girl Scouts for the past 30 years. We can’t wait until next year. Until then, we’ll be humming our closing camp song, Linger.
