Girl Scout Olivia, a Cadette in Troop 2223, was invited to serve with the Honor Guard at a state of the village address for Palmetto Bay and League of Cities in December. She shared about her experience and what she learned with us for our Tropical Talk Blog.
Hi! I’m Olivia, and I am a Cadette from Troop 2223. This past December, I was asked to participate in a very important role of walking with the Honor Guard at the Village of Palmetto Bay State of the Village Address and League of Cities at Thalatta Estates.
It was really a privilege to be asked to help present the colors at these events. Presenting the Colors is a military tradition dating back to the beginning of our country. In fact, not every organization can present the colors at an event. It’s a practice conducted by military color guards of the United States, Girl Scouts of the United States of America, The Boy Scouts of America, JROTC, ROTC, police or fire department, Sea Cadets, Civil Air Patrol, and Young Marines.
I am not going to lie but I was nervous. Presenting and walking with our nation’s flag in front of so many of our community leaders and fellow residents is a big responsibility. Honoring the American, State of Florida, and Village of Palmetto Bay Flag is a serious tradition and process to represent what those flags mean to us.
I felt so honored to be asked by the Village of Palmetto Bay to participate with the Honor Guard. It’s one of the things that make me proud to be a Girl Scout. Being part of Girl Scouts gives me the privilege to be a part of the only female organization that is recognized to present and conduct the presentation of the colors and retire US and state flags. These are the experiences as a Girl Scout that I will never forget.
