Girl Scout Alum and entrepreneur, Samantha Murphy, talks to us about “Building Community, One Buzz at a Time” through her media outlet, 305 Hive®. Samantha is an active GSTF supporter and served on the planning committee of Campfires to Cocktails 2024 and as celebrity judge for Cast Iron Chef 2024.
Q: Tell us about your journey into entrepreneurship and taking over 305 Hive.
My journey into entrepreneurship has been one of passion and community. I've been an entrepreneur since I was 14, when I started my clothing and jewelry business. I've always been drawn to creating connections, and 305 Hive Media® offered the perfect opportunity to turn that passion into a business. When I started 305 Hive® five years ago, I saw its potential to be more than just a newsletter—it could be a hub where local businesses, events, and residents come together. It's been incredibly rewarding to see it grow into a trusted resource for the Miami community.
Q: What lessons or skills from your time as a Girl Scout have had the biggest impact on your business life?
Being a Girl Scout taught me the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and goal setting. I learned how to lead confidently while being adaptable to challenges—a vital skill in entrepreneurship. The Girl Scouts' focus on service and community also instilled in me a desire to give back, which remains central to everything I do with 305 Hive Media®.
Q: You're a supporter of Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida and serve as a Second Century partner. What inspired you to give back in such a meaningful way?
Girl Scouts played an integral role in shaping who I am today, and I am deeply grateful for the values and experiences it instilled in me. Supporting Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida as a Second Century partner feels like a natural way to help ensure the next generation of girls has access to those same opportunities for growth, leadership, and community impact. I also love the synergy between the adult troop, Troop 305, and our branding as 305 Hive—it’s a perfect pairing.
Q: Why do you think it's important for successful alums like yourself to stay involved with the organization?
When alums stay connected, we provide a living example of the long-term impact of Girl Scouts. It's important for current Girl Scouts to see what's possible and for the organization to have champions supporting its mission. By staying involved, we create a bridge between the past, present, and future of Girl Scouts.
Q: 305 Hive Media has grown significantly as a community platform. What role do you see local media playing in supporting and uplifting local businesses and community initiatives?
Local media plays a vital role in amplifying the voices of small businesses, nonprofits, and community leaders. 305 Hive Media® aims to be a bridge, connecting residents with the resources, events, and initiatives that make Miami unique. When we highlight these stories, we help build a stronger, more connected community.
Q: How does 305 Hive help connect residents with causes and organizations that make a difference in the community?
Through features, spotlights, and partnerships, 305 Hive® raises awareness for local causes and organizations. Whether it's promoting fundraisers, volunteering opportunities, or events, we aim to inspire our readers to engage with and support initiatives that positively impact Miami. To further support non-profits, we offer complimentary spots in our Classified Section at the end of our Newsletter, where they can post their needs—such as backpack collections, volunteer opportunities, and more. Additionally, our 305 Hive® Cares Campaign provides a platform for organizations to share their needs for items and volunteers. Q: What advice would you give to current Girl Scouts who may want to follow in your entrepreneurial footsteps?
Dream big, but stay grounded in your values. Entrepreneurship is about solving problems and creating opportunities, so don't be afraid to take risks or step out of your comfort zone. And remember, relationships and community matter—build them with care.
Q: What's next for 305 Hive, and how do you see it continuing to grow within the community?
The future of 305 Hive® is about expanding our reach while staying true to our mission. We're working on new ways to connect with the community, from events to digital engagement, and continuing to amplify the stories of local businesses and causes. Growth for us means deeper connections and more impact.
Q: Looking back on your journey, what are you most proud of—both in your personal accomplishments and your work with 305 Hive?
Personally, I'm proud of staying true to my values while embracing new challenges. With 305 Hive Media®, I'm proud of the community we've built and the positive difference we've made in connecting people. It's incredibly fulfilling to know that our work inspires others and strengthens the fabric of our local community.
