May is Military Appreciation Month, and Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida is thanking troops for their service with some Cookie Love. Our Cookies from the Heart donation cookies are on their way to three lucky groups of military recipients. This year we worked with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce to identify appropriate recipients.
The bulk of the 654 cases went to Special Operations Command South for shipment to soldiers oversees and also the Florida National Guard at the request of Governor Rick Scott. A few cases will be given out by our Homestead Community girls at the City of Homestead's Military Appreciation Day on May 12.
Special Operations Command South Deputy Commander COL Marshall Ecklund fondly remembers receiving a "taste of home" from Girl Scout Cookies when he was deployed in Afghanistan.
"Girl Scout Cookies are about as close to home as one can get when deployed," he said. "The Girl Scouts' generosity makes a difference in the morale of so many Service members who love serving their country yet long to be home."
Cookies from Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida will be shipped to Central and South America and possibly Afghanistan.
