One Friday per month, GSTF hosts a virtual fireside chat with amazing women working in all kinds of STEM careers. This month, meet Kaleigh Walker, a Citrus Scientist and Agronomist who likes to call herself the "Mom" of Florida's Citrus Trees!
As a Biological Scientist with the Florida Department of Agriculture, Kaleigh uses microscopes and a biotechnology technique called shoot-tip grafting to transform tiny pieces of plant tissue into healthy citrus "mother trees." After rigorous testing, these trees become the source of all new citrus trees planted across Florida. If you've driven past a citrus grove in Florida, chances are you've seen trees that began in her lab! Kaleigh's STEM journey began at Tallahassee Community College before transferring to Florida A&M University, a choice that helped make her dream of becoming a scientist more affordable. Join us to explore biotechnology, micrografting, the science behind Florida's iconic orange groves, and find out what Kaleigh whispers to her baby trees when no one else is listening.
