One Friday per month, GSTF hosts a virtual fireside chat with amazing women working in all kinds of STEM careers. This month's featured speaker is Alyssa J. Sargent, an ornithologist and hummingbird expert, whose work reveals the tiny, action-packed lives of hummingbirds. Alyssa entered college majoring in Environmental Science, but it wasn't until her junior year, in an Animal Behavior class, that science suddenly took flight and she realized there could be a career in watching animals, asking questions, and telling their stories! Today, Alyssa studies how hummingbirds make decisions in their daily lives, using miniature electronic backpack tracking devices called biologgers to follow these tiny athletes through their natural habitats. Her birding curiosity has carried her around the globe: from studying owls in Canada and fairy wrens in Australia to storm petrels in the Azores and songbirds across the United States. Tune in to learn why Alyssa thinks these dazzling birds are the coolest animals on Earth, how many M&M's they weigh, and what it's like to blend science, creativity, and adventure as a wildlife researcher.
