GSCTF receives gift from Peacock Foundation

MIAMI – Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc. received a $30,000 grant from Peacock Foundation, Inc. to launch the Moving Forward in STEM: iGirls program.
 
Moving Forward in STEM: iGirls will serve over 1,000 girls in grades four through eight with a high-quality leadership development experience focused on exposing them to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). During the 2012-2013 Girl Scout year, girls will participate in a six session series with hands-on learning events featuring prominent female STEM professionals.

“Studies conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute show that although 74% of teen girls are interested in the field of STEM, more than half of these girls feel that STEM is not a typical career path for girls. They also believe that if they went into a STEM career, they’d have to work harder than a man to be taken seriously. We are most grateful for the continued support of Peacock Foundation as we continue to engage girls and minimize the gender gap that exists in science, technology, engineering, and math,” said the council’s chief executive officer, Maria D. Tejera.
